Cagliari Hosts the Italian Olympic Classes Championship Edison Next 2024: A Spectacular Display of Sailing Talent
The Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) successfully concluded the Italian Olympic Classes Championship – Edison Next 2024, in Cagliari. The championship, part of the Sardinia Sailing Cup, was organized by the Windsurfing Club Cagliari and the Italian Naval League of Cagliari. With around 500 athletes from across Italy and abroad, the event was a remarkable display of sailing talent and sportsmanship, reinforced by Sardinia’s growing status as a sailing destination.
Perfect Racing Conditions and a Strong Finale
The final day, Sunday, September 29, was met with ideal weather in the Gulf of Angels, allowing for competitive racing across all classes. The Maestrale wind, slightly calmer than the previous day, provided consistent speeds between 12 and 18 knots. Mirco Babini, coordinator of the Sardinia Sailing Cup, expressed satisfaction with the conditions, noting that all scheduled races were completed, and athletes enjoyed their time on the water.
Francesco Ettorre, President of the Italian Sailing Federation, remarked, “The Italian Olympic Classes Championship Edison Next 2024 concluded with great satisfaction and pride. The athletes demonstrated high-level competition, and Italian sailing showcased its passion and strength.” He also thanked all those involved in making the event possible and emphasized Sardinia’s role in promoting sailing on the international stage.
Highlights from the Championship
The event saw top competitors across seven Olympic sailing disciplines, setting the stage for intense competition leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympics. The championship also included Para Sailing events, underscoring the FIV’s commitment to inclusivity in the sport.
The races culminated in an awards ceremony held at Marina Piccola’s amphitheater, attended by top authorities and a large audience of athletes and supporters. A minute of silence was observed in memory of Anna Laura Pilia, a young sailor, and Sebastiano Palumberi, a federal judge.
Before the awards, the FIVillage stage hosted a talk titled “Together for the Protection of the Sea,” featuring marine biologist Carlotta Santolini of the One Ocean Foundation and Researcher at the University of Insubria, alongside FIV III Zone President Corrado Fara.
