Three-Way Tie Kicks Off the WingFoil Racing World Cup Brazil

An Electrifying Start in Jericoacoara Wingfoil Final Racing World Cup

The WingFoil Racing World Cup Brazil began with an exhilarating day of three long-distance races in Jericoacoara, a stunning destination in northern Brazil. The event, held at the eco-luxury resort Vila Kalango, brought together elite athletes from across the globe to compete in this final leg of the season. While the idyllic scenery provided the perfect backdrop, the competition on the water was fierce, leaving three riders tied at the top of the leaderboard.

Poland, Spain, and France Take the Lead

After an intense day of racing, Poland’s Kamil Manowiecki leads the men’s division, with Spain’s Nia Suardiaz dominating the women’s competition. Both divisions showcased incredible stamina and skill, with riders battling challenging conditions, including gusty winds and seaweed-covered waters.

In the men’s division, French rider Julien Rattotti and World Champion Mathis Ghio join Manowiecki in a three-way tie, highlighting just how close the competition is. Meanwhile, Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo sits just behind, displaying his freestyle expertise to navigate tricky conditions. For the women, Maddalena Spanu of Italy and France’s Orane Ceris round out the podium after an impressive display of agility and determination.

Adapting to Tricky Conditions

The opening day saw slightly lighter winds than Jericoacoara’s usual 25-30 knot breezes, with conditions fluctuating between 13 and 15 knots. Despite this, the athletes demonstrated incredible adaptability. Riders like Francesco Cappuzzo and Julien Rattotti turned their freestyle background into a tactical advantage, utilizing jumps to clear seaweed and maintain speed.

“I went out with my 6.5m wing, and it was the right call,” said Cappuzzo, who finished the day with a strong 1-2-3 scoreline. “The breeze was patchy, and I had to pump hard, but being able to tack and gybe at the right moments made all the difference.”

Similarly, Rattotti, who trains in light winds in Nice, capitalized on his experience. “It’s really physical,” he said. “In conditions like this, your heart rate is over 180 BPM, and it’s hard to think strategically, but I managed to stay consistent.”

Mastering the Course

While some struggled, others thrived. Manowiecki, for instance, showed incredible resilience by recovering from a poor start in the second race to finish in third place. “I almost fell at the first mark but fought back,” he said. “The speed I had today was key.”

In the women’s division, Suardiaz used her freestyle skills to stay competitive, even in challenging conditions. “I hate the seaweed, but I’ve learned not to focus on it too much,” she said. Despite the obstacles, she maintained her composure and topped the leaderboard.

First-Time Riders Shine

The event also highlighted new talent, with riders like Czech competitor Kristyna Chalupnikova gaining valuable experience. “This is my first time in Jeri, and it’s paradise,” she said. “The long-distance races were tough, but I’m excited for the short-course races tomorrow.”

Eco-Tourism and #PreserveJeri

Beyond the competition, the event emphasizes sustainability and eco-tourism. Vila Kalango, celebrating 25 years of hospitality, serves as a model for preserving Jericoacoara’s natural beauty. Co-founder Paolo Piatti addressed the athletes, urging them to protect the environment and community. “Last year, I asked you to share the beauty of Jeri. This year, I ask you to protect it,” he said.

Looking Ahead

With three days of competition remaining, including short-course races and the medal series, the athletes are gearing up for more thrilling action. The event’s focus on innovation ensures that new equipment designs and strategies will continue to push the sport to new heights.
