Maximilian Maeder: Unstoppable at Fuerteventura KiteFoil International Open Cup
After a thrilling weekend of intense competition, the current world champion, Maximilian Maeder from Singapore, emerged as an undefeated force, securing the coveted gold medal at the Fuerteventura KiteFoil International Open Cup.
The event, organized by the Canakite Experiences Sports Club, showcased exceptional talent and unparalleled excitement.
Podium Standings
Maximilian Maeder’s dominance was evident as he clinched the top spot, leaving Brazilian Bruno Lobo in second place. The podium also featured Jannis Maus from Germany and Riccardo Pianosi from Italy, the current holder of the European title, securing third and fourth positions respectively.
In the women’s category, the spotlight shone on Catalan Gisela Pulido, set to represent Spain at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Pulido managed to secure a commendable position within the top 5, showcasing her prowess alongside other formidable athletes.
The women’s podium saw English athlete Elle Aldridge claiming the top spot, followed by French Jessie Kampman and Italian Maggie Pescetto.
Gisela Pulido expressed her excitement about the upcoming Olympics, stating, “I am very excited to go to the Olympics; there is little time left, and I am eager for the day to come to fulfill my dream.”
Cancellation of the Third Day
Due to unforeseen maritime conditions, the third day of the Fuerteventura KiteFoil International Open Cup had to be canceled. Mirco Babini, the race director and President of the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), emphasized that the decision was made in consideration of the safety of the athletes. Large waves posed a significant risk, leading to concerns about entering and exiting the water safely.
Safety, particularly in light of the athletes’ upcoming commitments, was deemed a top priority. The cancellation aimed to preserve the physical condition of the competitors, ensuring they remain in optimal shape for future events.
Looking Ahead to 2024
While the Fuerteventura KiteFoil International Open Cup marked the end of an extensive winter training cycle, the athletes are gearing up for a series of standout events in 2024. The European Championship in Murcia in March and the Trofeo Princesa Sofía in Palma de Mallorca in April are on the horizon, setting the stage for intense competition.
July will witness the grandeur of the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the sailing venue located in the city of Marseille. Mirco Babini will continue his role as the race director for the KiteFoil and IQ foil competitions at the Olympics, further solidifying the global significance of these events.
Success and Recognition for Fuerteventura
Mirco Babini praised Fuerteventura as an exceptional place for training, with over sixty athletes from all continents participating due to the ideal conditions for kite foil practice. The success of the event and institutional support pave the way for Fuerteventura to be globally recognized as the preferred location for kite foil practice.
The Fuerteventura KiteFoil International Open Cup trophy presentation, held at the Corralejo Nautical School, saw representatives of institutions awarding the top athletes. In addition to the trophy in the shape of Fuerteventura island, competitors received typical Canary Islands products, including majorero goat cheese, red and green Canarian mojo sauce, and “gofio” flour.
The event, made possible through sponsorships from the Fuerteventura Island Tourism Department, Promotur Canary Islands, and the subsidy from the Government of the Canary Islands, garnered unconditional support from the La Oliva City Council.
