Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti Secure Second Olympic Gold, Becoming Italy’s Best Sailors at Paris 2024
Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti have cemented their status as Italy’s greatest Olympic sailors by securing their second Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024. This remarkable achievement follows their dominance in the Nacra 17 class over the past four years, highlighted by their gold medal victory at Tokyo 2020 and four world championship titles.
Mastering the Upgraded Nacra 17
The transition from a semi-foiler to a fully foiling Nacra 17 presented a significant challenge for the fleet. The technical upgrades to the rudders allowed the catamaran to foil both upwind and downwind, necessitating a new approach to racing. Despite these changes, Tita and Banti quickly adapted, showcasing their mastery by winning the 2022 World Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the first major event using the new setup.
Unmatched Work Ethic
Michele Marchesini, Head of the Italian Sailing Team, attributes their success to their unparalleled work ethic. “They always have the helicopter view of the campaign, they always see the bigger picture, but they also understand the details and no one works harder than them to bring all the details together,” he said.
A Long-term Vision and Dedication
Tita’s post-victory remarks highlight their dedication and long-term vision. “We said to each other before starting this cycle that winning the second one was going to be much harder than the first one,” Tita noted. “We are proud of what we achieved during this period. We didn’t win the medal today or this week. It’s all the work that we put together for three years and three World Championships that we have won in the past three years.”
Humble Champions
Despite their accolades, Banti maintains a humble perspective on their achievements. “We don’t see ourselves like that. We just try to do our best this week, and every time we go racing. Now we need some days to think about what we have done,” she stated.
Balancing Dual Commitments
One of the significant challenges during their campaign was balancing dual commitments. While Banti remained fully focused on the Olympic goal, Tita split his attention between the Olympics and his role as a helmsman for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, the Italian team competing in the America’s Cup. This dual focus presented tough moments, particularly for Banti, who excelled in maintaining peak physical fitness.
Immediate Transition to America’s Cup
With the Olympic gold medal now around his neck, Tita is preparing to head to Barcelona for the America’s Cup. “It has been very tough for me to combine two things like this, but even more for Caterina, and it for sure put her in a lot of tough moments. But she did an incredible job, especially working on the physical side to be as fit as possible,”
Tita acknowledged.
Reflecting on Their Legacy
While Tita quickly transitions to his next challenge, Banti can take a moment to reflect and enjoy their historic achievement. As Italy’s greatest female Olympic sailor, she has left an indelible mark on the sport and inspired countless future sailors.
How It Works: Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17) and Mixed Dinghy (470) Competition
Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17)
- Fleet Size: 19 boats
- Races: 12
- Scoring: The boat with the lowest total points ranks first. Athletes can discard their worst finish after three races.
- Medal Race: The top ten boats qualify for the Medal Race, which is worth double points. The score in this race cannot be discarded, and the crew with the smallest overall points total will win gold.
