New Zealand clinched consecutive wins in the United Arab Emirates, overcoming light wind conditions to defeat Spain and the United States in Abu Dhabi.
The Kiwis delivered a flawless start, securing a crucial inside track to Mark 1 and extending their lead as Spain and the US competed behind them.
Although Spain made a strong comeback, challenging the Kiwis in the final stretch, the Kiwis were the first to cross the finish line, securing two wins in the Middle East. Following the race, New Zealand’s driver, Peter Burling, hailed the victory as a fantastic start to 2024.
He further noted that their performance in the last two races greatly boosted their overall standings. New Zealand’s journey to victory was not smooth, and they only narrowly made it to the three-boat showdown.
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi marked the first Final appearance for the USA’s revamped team under Taylor Canfield, who finished third overall in their second event.
Despite their successful performance, Canfield voiced some disappointment, maintaining that their aim was to win.
Spain, on the other hand, had a remarkable turnaround after finishing last in Dubai, winning three out of five fleet races and finishing second overall. Germany also achieved its best result so far, finishing second in Fleet Race 5. This event was also notable for being the first Final without Australia since the start of Season 4.
The fleet races were not without drama, as Switzerland received 4 penalty points for hitting ROCKWOOL DEN, and Denmark was penalized 2 points for failing to avoid the collision. In a separate incident, Canada collided with a race mark that began moving remotely during the race.
The updated season rankings show New Zealand narrowing Australia’s lead at the top of the table, with Australia currently in the lead with 56 points followed by New Zealand with 48 points. Meanwhile, Canfield’s USA manages to rise to 3rd place overall, accumulating 45 points.
The F50 fleet will next meet for battle at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix | Sydney on February 24-25.
