No Wind, No Problem: Champions Crowned Despite Final Day Challenges
The WingFoil Racing World Cup in China concluded with Mathis Ghio from France and Nia Suardiaz from Spain taking top honors in their respective categories. Despite the absence of wind on the final day at Pingtan Island, the champions were determined based on the earlier performances throughout the week. Both Ghio and Suardiaz had established themselves as frontrunners in the Marathon Race and maintained their dominance during the short course races.
Rising Talent: The Chinese Competitors Impress
Mathis Ghio, reflecting on his victory, noted the rapid progress of the Chinese team. “This summer’s training paid off, especially in the Marathon Race, where the competition level was higher than ever. The Chinese athletes, despite their short time in the sport, are improving rapidly,” said Ghio. He also commended his fellow competitors, including Poland’s Kamil Manowiecki, who secured the silver medal, and Italy’s Francesco Cappuzzo, who took home the bronze.
Suardiaz’s Winning Streak Continues
In the women’s category, 17-year-old Nia Suardiaz expressed her excitement about her first victory in China. “Winning here is incredible, especially in my debut competition in this country. The competition was fierce, but I’m happy with my performance, particularly in the long-distance race,” Suardiaz shared. She was followed closely by Italy’s Maddalena Spanu, the reigning World Champion, who claimed the silver medal, and Poland’s Karolina Kluszczynska, who secured bronze.
Manowiecki’s Breakthrough Performance
Kamil Manowiecki’s second-place finish in the men’s category marked his strongest performance since he began wingfoil racing. The Polish athlete, with a background in Olympic racing, sees a bright future for the sport, particularly if it gains Olympic status. “We need to be ready to compete in lighter winds,” Manowiecki emphasized. “With the right training, I believe we can all reach new heights in this sport.”
Celebrating Victory: A Playful End to the Competition
With no racing possible on the final day due to the lack of wind, the medallists celebrated in a unique way—by taking a thrilling ride on a giant inflatable Pikachu. This light-hearted celebration marked the end of a successful and competitive event in China.
The WingFoil Racing World Cup circuit now moves to Italy for the next event in Sardinia, where competitors are expected to bring even more advanced skills and strategies to the races.
