Sardinia Sets Sail: iQFoil European Championship Kicks Off as Part of the Sardinia Sailing Cup

The iQFoil European Championship is officially underway in Cagliari, bringing together around 120 top athletes from across the globe. The championship is part of a larger initiative, the Sardinia Sailing Cup, which has a packed schedule of sailing events throughout October, organized by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and promoted by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.

Practice Race and Opening Ceremony

The championship commenced with a practice race, followed by an inauguration ceremony at the Marina Piccola amphitheater. The event will take place from October 5th to 11th in the Gulf of Angels, where athletes will engage in various competitions such as Course Racing, Slalom, and Marathon.

The Competitors

The championship has drawn a diverse group of around 50 female and 70 male athletes, representing over 20 nations, all competing in this Open format event. Among the notable Italian athletes are Federico Alan Pilloni and Carola Colasanto, both of whom claimed titles at the Youth Sailing World Championship held in July on Lake Garda.

A Full Month of Foiling Events in Cagliari

The iQFoil European Championship is one of several high-profile regattas being held in Cagliari in October. Following this event, the Foil International Academy Trophy, part of the “Next Generation Foil Academy powered by Luna Rossa” project, will begin on October 15th. This event will feature the Waszp Foil class, under the direction of federal coach Alessandra Sensini.

From October 16th to 20th, the WingFoil Racing World Cup Italy will take place, with over 65 participants expected, recognized by World Sailing as a Special Event. Additionally, in the third week of November, the International Development Programme will focus on international Para Sailing events.

A Statement from the Organizers

Mirco Babini, the coordinator of the Sardinia Sailing Cup, expressed excitement about the wide variety of international sailing events taking place in the Gulf of Cagliari. He emphasized the optimal conditions for iQFoil and WingFoil regattas in the autumn months and also highlighted the Foil International Academy and new developments in Para Sailing.

The event is part of Sardinia’s commitment to promoting sports and tourism, with the beautiful waters of Su Siccu and the Gulf of Angels providing a stunning backdrop for these international competitions.
